For the second year in a row, Norton Healthcare has been named among the nation’s top workplaces for disability inclusion. This recognition comes from the 2023 Disability Equality Index (DEI), which assessed our organization alongside 485 U.S. health systems. We’re tremendously proud to rank in the 15 top workplaces, earning a score of 90% percent.

The DEI, a joint initiative of the American Association of People With Disabilities and Disability:IN, is a national benchmarking tool that offers businesses an opportunity to receive an objective assessment of overall disability policies and practices, including culture and leadership, enterprisewide access, community engagement, supplier diversity, and employment practices.

“Our purpose is to provide quality health care to all those we serve. To honor our purpose to the very best of our ability, we choose to be a workplace that’s welcoming and supportive of all people. Our work is too important to leave any source of talent untapped,” said Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare. “Congratulations to everyone who worked passionately to put our organization in a position to receive this honor.”

“We will continue these efforts and remain committed to doing more to ensure all feel welcome to work and be cared for at Norton Healthcare.”

Visit NortonHealthcareCareers.com to explore impactful roles on a team where Care Has No Labels.

Achieving this designation wouldn’t have been possible without our Equity, Inclusion & Belonging team and ABLED (Awareness Benefiting Leadership and Employees About Disabilities) employee resource group (ERG) working to support an organizational culture defined by awareness, collaboration and advocacy.

Leslie Martin, director, Workforce Development, serves as the co-lead for the ABLED ERG. As a mother to Nicky, her 27-year-old son with Down syndrome, the group’s work to support disability inclusion is personal.

“It’s important to recognize that my son, others with Down syndrome and anyone who lives with a disability has so much potential to work, to be part of society and to be independent,” Leslie said.

The ABLED ERG enlightens and empowers Norton Healthcare employees to better care for and work with people impacted by disability. The group serves as an educational resource while also focusing on opportunities to improve access, inclusion and respect.

Jeremy White, manager, pediatric patient analytics, Norton Children’s Hospital, serves alongside Leslie as co-lead for ABLED. Like Leslie, he’s informed and motivated by the unique perspective of a parent to a child with Down syndrome. James, Jeremy’s 11-year-old son, inspires him to look through a positive lens to discover new possibilities.

“I want to help empower my son and the thousands of others like him in our community to reach their fullest potential,” Jeremy said. “We all need to look beyond the surface and be willing to give everyone an opportunity to express who they are and what they can contribute.”

RaShaw Edelen faced a question from his uncle he didn’t know how to answer.

RaShaw was excited to restore an old car, but his uncle asked him what he planned to do with it when it was finished.

“Where was I going to put it? The side of the street wasn’t a great place to fix up the car,” RaShaw said.

The uncle challenged RaShaw to take the money he was planning to spend on the car, set it aside and find a home.

RaShaw, a mailroom receiving and distribution technician with Norton Healthcare, saved for over a year before he signed up in January 2022 for a Norton Healthcare program that supports employees to become first-time homebuyers. Thanks to the program, he was on the road to owning a home of his own.

“I didn’t want to just go buy a house,” RaShaw said. “I needed to learn and be taught what to do, what to look for and how to do it the right way.”

RaShaw, who has been with Norton Healthcare for nearly 12 years, closed on his first home on April 28, 2022.

“It’s a cool thing. I thought it would take me a long time,” RaShaw said. “I thought doing this would take a lifetime.”

Now RaShaw shares his experience to encourage other young men. He understands the sacrifice it might take to save money and ask for help.

“There’s not a lot of single male role models showing that buying a house is an option for us. I can be that guy for others who need the help. This is a reminder to other men that we can achieve our goals,”  RaShaw said.

He’s the first of his three siblings to become a homeowner.

“They see me purchasing a home and it motivates them,” RaShaw said. “Even though I’m their little brother, they are asking me what they should do and how to do it.”

With keys to a new house and a garage for his car, he is planning for what’s next.

“I have lots of plans. I’m ready to build on and add on to it,” RaShaw said. “This is a generational thing, a long-term dream.”

How does Norton Healthcare help first-time homebuyers?

Norton Healthcare works through The Housing Partnership Inc., a nonprofit community organization in Louisville, to help prepare first-time employee homebuyers before they purchase a home. First-time homebuyers get help navigating the buying process, identifying opportunities to save money and closing the deal. Budgeting, counseling, homebuyer education and financial assistance are all part of this program, which offers support for a traditional home purchase or homeownership through Habitat for Humanity.

The traditional home purchase program provides a $5,000, four-year forgivable loan to be used toward closing costs/down payment with the purchase of a primary residence.

How do employees qualify?

Employees must meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development definition of a first-time homebuyer, work at least 32 hours per pay period and have a base salary from Norton Healthcare of $65,000 or less to qualify.

Ester Cuc Chamorro’s first experience working in a health care setting came in elementary school.

Ester attended Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana’s Biztown, where kids have the chance to participate in a simulated city and work “adult” jobs. Her role in the town was a doctor, and she had the opportunity to care for other kids who played patients. From this pivotal experience, Ester developed an interest in the medical world.

As a student at Valley High School, she participated in ROTC, cheerleading, dual-credit college classes and, as her interest in health care persisted, she was involved in the school’s biomedical sciences program.

Her biomedical sciences classes were preparing her for a career. During the same time, she gave birth to her daughter and learned to balance motherhood with a jam-packed schedule.

A teacher’s encouragement

Ester was in her junior year at Valley when a teacher, Jennifer Vermillion, encouraged her to apply to the Norton Healthcare High School Academy. Jennifer, in her 16th year teaching at Valley High School, knew Ester would be a great fit for the program, which provides hands-on health care experience.

“Ester is a very hardworking student, and I knew the program would be great for her,” Jennifer said. “She was already very involved with extracurriculars, but I knew this program could help her fulfill her dreams of going into the medical world.”

Ester submitted her application and interviewed for the program. She was accepted and placed at Norton Hospital as a patient care associate in the cardiovascular unit.

Her responsibilities included feeding patients, checking vital signs, helping move patients and keeping nurses informed about patients.

A passion and a career

“I had a lot of stress from school and my extracurriculars, but coming to work and seeing patients improve always made me feel so good,” Ester said. “It meant a lot knowing I helped with their progress.”

Her passion for health care was confirmed.

Ester said she felt at home while working at Norton Hospital. She described her experience in the program as teaching her how to communicate her emotions, adapt to new situations and to always be kind.

Ester graduated from Valley High School in the spring of 2020 and completed the program. She is now a regular Norton Healthcare employee.

The High School Academy gives students visibility into a health care career and helps the hospital system develop a pipeline of future employees, according to

Addie Hibbs, who oversees the program as senior career and college specialist in Norton Healthcare’s career development office.

“We want to show students what all is possible with a career in health care and give them career options,” Addie said. “This helps with workforce needs as well.”

Norton Healthcare High School Academy eligibility

Students must be ages 17 or older and enrolled in a health sciences academy pathway at a partnering school to be eligible.

There are three different job roles for program participants: lab processing, receptionist and patient care associate. Students are placed according to their interest.

These paid positions require 12 hours of work per week.

Ester may have achieved her childhood dreams by working in health care, but she isn’t finished. Ester has applied for the Norton Healthcare Scholars Program, which offers assistance to employees pursuing a degree in certain health care roles. She plans to attend Bellarmine University, where she’ll pursue a four-year degree with a double major in nursing and lab science.

“I just want to keep pushing forward,” Ester said. “For both me and my daughter.”

Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, Norton Healthcare and Governor Andy Beshear today announced a $100 million investment in West Louisville that will bring a collection of life-enhancing programs and services to one of Kentucky’s most underserved communities.

The investment will transform a 20-acre brownfield site located at 28th Street and Broadway into an Opportunity Campus that will house Goodwill’s headquarters operation, career services, a collection of local social service agencies and Norton Healthcare’s new $70 million hospital. Norton Healthcare’s investment includes $7 million that will be used to purchase the land for the hospital, as well as to support the transformational services that will be provided on the campus.

“When we determined we wanted to have a presence in West Louisville, we wanted to do it in a way that would have a lasting impact on the community,” said Amy Luttrell, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kentucky. “We believe our Opportunity Campus will be the beginning of significant change for the people in West Louisville who are looking for pathways out of poverty.”

West Louisville is a nine-neighborhood community where the median household income is $21,000. The area has endured years of disinvestment that has left many of its 65,000 mostly African American residents underserved in a community that has limited employment opportunities.

To address those needs, Goodwill is building a 120,000 square-foot facility on its Opportunity Campus that will be used as a one-stop shop for people who need help removing the barriers that prevent them from establishing self-sufficient lifestyles. Visitors to the campus will be able to access job training programs, legal support, youth mentoring, restorative justice services, drop-in childcare, personal grooming options, behavior and mental health treatment and second-chance banking.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, KentuckianaWorks, Volunteers of America, the YMCA, Legal Aid Society, Park Community Credit Union, Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center and the Kentucky College of Barbering will all co-locate with Goodwill Industries of Kentucky in the $30 million facility at the Opportunity Campus to offer West Louisville residents an unprecedented collection of life-enhancing services all under one roof.

Collectively, the agencies are expected to bring more than 200 jobs to West Louisville at an average annual wage of $59,000 and will serve approximately 50,000 people every year with their programs, services and campus offerings. The career services programs at the Opportunity Campus are expected to have a cumulative annual impact of $18.7 million by helping to place more than 600 job seekers into full-time employment with businesses throughout the region that pay a minimum of $13 per hour. Another 200 construction jobs are expected to be created to help build the facility.

In a separate 40,000 – 60,000-square-foot building on the Opportunity Campus, Norton Healthcare will open the first hospital in West Louisville in more than 100 years. Comprehensive services will include adult and pediatric primary care physician offices, emergency room services, inpatient services and outpatient functions. Imaging services, including X-rays and CT scans, will be available, along with specialty services such as women’s health, cardiology, neurology and endocrinology. This hospital will be unlike any other medical facility in West Louisville. The new Norton Healthcare hospital will create approximately 100 new jobs in West Louisville with an average salary of $60,000.

“Norton Healthcare has been intentional about providing access to quality medical treatment by eliminating obstacles so all residents can live a healthy and prosperous life,” said Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare. “This state-of-the-art facility will help us continue to bring health equity to the forefront. A person’s ZIP code should never define their health status and their ability to receive care.”

The Opportunity Campus is expected to be complete in 2023 when Goodwill Industries of Kentucky will celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Norton Healthcare’s facility is expected to take 18-24 months to complete.

“Access to quality health care, jobs and life-enhancing services is how we can better the lives of our people, break cycles of poverty and create a better future for every Kentuckian,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “This investment by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky and Norton Healthcare will truly move West Louisville forward and create a lasting impact for this area and our people for generations to come. I am thankful for these two organizations and their commitment to investing in West Louisville and our people.”

Details about the Opportunity Campus – along with the results from a West Louisville community feedback report by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky – can be accessed on the website: www.GoodwillWestLouisville.com.[vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″]

Norton Healthcare has been recognized on the Forbes list of America’s Best Employers 2022. This prestigious award is presented by Forbes and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The list was announced on February 9, 2022 and can currently be viewed on the Forbes website.

Forbes and Statista selected America’s Best Employers 2022 through an independent survey applied to a vast sample of approximately 60,000 American employees working for companies with more than 1,000 employees in America. Across 25 industry sectors, 500 large employers and 500 midsize employers have been included on the list. The evaluation was based on direct and indirect recommendations from employees who were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family. Employee evaluations also included other employers in their respective industries that stood out either positively or negatively.

Based on the results of the survey, Norton Healthcare is pleased to be recognized on the Forbes list of America’s Best Employers 2022.

“Norton Healthcare employees are committed to serving our patients and this community. You don’t become one of America’s Best Employers without employing great people who, in turn, recommend other great people to join the team!” said Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare. “We’ve experienced so many challenges over the past few years, and it has reinforced how strong our Norton Healthcare family is.”

Black History Month is a time for us to appreciate the trailblazers who paved the way for the world we live in today. Throughout February, we honor courageous individuals who stood for freedom and equality. This month is an important time to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans.

At Norton Healthcare, our African American employee resource group works each year to commemorate Black History Month. This group reached out to employees from throughout the organization and asked: “What does Black History Month mean to you?”

Hear from some of our compassionate caregivers, as they speak to the significance of this month.

Bellarmine University and Norton Healthcare announced plans that will expand their partnerships in sports medicine, campus wellness and nursing. This new 5-year, $2.4 million partnership will ensure the health of the campus community while also expanding and diversifying the regional workforce.

This is the largest partnership in Bellarmine’s history.

“I want to thank the Norton Healthcare Board of Trustees for their transformational support of our students over the past two decades and look forward to continuing our partnership for years to come,” said Bellarmine’s president, Dr. Susan M. Donovan. “Together, we are preparing outstanding students to be the great leaders that our future workforce demands.”

“We have had a great partnership with Bellarmine University over the years. We are excited to do more great things together to support not only students and student athletes but those who are working toward careers in healthcare,” said Norton Healthcare President and CEO Russell F. Cox.

Bellarmine will use Norton Healthcare’s $2.4 million investment to:

  • Meet the greater level of health support, including additional athletic trainers, required for student-athletes by Bellarmine’s rise to NCAA Division I in 2020. Norton Healthcare will remain the official healthcare provider of Bellarmine University’s Athletics Department, and Norton Sports Health professionals will continue to provide comprehensive care to Bellarmine student-athletes.
  • Increase health services and wellness programming for all students. A Norton Healthcare employee will help to staff the Bellarmine clinic; Norton Healthcare will provide eCare services for the campus community; and Norton Healthcare practitioners will be Bellarmine’s preferred referral partners.
  • Diversify and increase the number of practice-ready healthcare providers and develop new academic programming. Norton Healthcare will continue to support the Norton Healthcare Chair of Graduate Studies in Nursing and will provide scholarships to students completing the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program, with a preference for those from demographic groups historically underrepresented in nursing. Because the Accelerated BSN is a 12-month program for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree, the funding will result in the graduation of new nurses each year of the partnership.

Norton Healthcare’s partnership with Bellarmine dates to 2002 and the university’s first cohort of Lansing Scholars, whose costs are partially covered by the Norton Healthcare Foundation and who begin their careers at Norton Healthcare upon graduation, where they are eligible to have their loans forgiven.

In July 2009, Norton Healthcare and Bellarmine formed a collaborative nursing venture to further address the community’s healthcare workforce needs. In 2013, that partnership was renewed and a second focus—sports medicine—was added. In 2016, Bellarmine and Norton Healthcare added strategic ventures related to campus wellness.
