More than 42,000 donors contributed $200,718,740 to not-for-profit Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s during their “Just Imagine” campaign. The campaign launched publicly in early 2024 to raise funds to help improve the health and quality of life for every person in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The Norton Healthcare Foundation and Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation led the campaign with co-chairs Dr. Mark Lynn and Cindy Lynn.

“We are deeply appreciative of everyone who supported the campaign and our mission of providing quality health care to all those we serve. This includes a constant focus on improving access to care, as well as innovative programs, services and research,” said Russell F. Cox, president and chief executive officer, Norton Healthcare. “As a not-for-profit, we are only able to do this through the generosity of others.”

“The support for the campaign has been incredible,” said Lynnie Meyer, R.N., Ed.D., FAHP, CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “We’re excited to bring innovations and new programs to the community and imagine a brighter a future for all.”

Funds raised have already made an impact through the following:

  • Expansion of Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute, a part of Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s, with Kentucky’s first perinatal program for women with diabetes who wish to have children’ a hub for diabetes research and cell transplants aimed at curing Type 1 diabetes; expanded care for athletes with diabetes; and a program for children transitioning to adult care
  • Purchase of high-frequency focused ultrasound technology — the first in Kentucky — to help relieve symptoms experienced by patients with essential tremor
  • Establishing new research programs that bring the latest technology and treatments to patients with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Additional access to care through Norton West Louisville Hospital, Norton Community Medical Associates in Frankfort, Kentucky, and a new multipractice office in Westport Plaza in northeastern Louisville

These services, programs and innovations will benefit people in Greater Louisville and surrounding counties, as well as communities throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. This includes Owensboro, Bowling Green and Frankfort in Kentucky, and Madison and Scottsburg in Indiana, to name a few.

Thanks to a $40,000 grant from the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation, Norton Healthcare and Madison Consolidated Schools (MCS) will partner to offer virtual medical care to students at all six schools across the MCS system in Jefferson County, Indiana.

The Norton eCare School Telemedicine Program will allow MCS students to see a Norton Healthcare provider through a secure video visit from the school nurse’s office. Working together, the school nurse and Norton Healthcare provider will use special medical technology to examine the student, look at the child’s skin, listen to their heart and lungs, and check their nose, throat and ears. The nurse also can perform tests for strep throat, COVID and flu.

Common conditions that can be treated through a telemedicine visit include cold, fever, rash, earache, pinkeye and sore throat. After the visit, the provider will follow up with the parent and send an after-visit summary home with the child. Any needed medications will be sent to the family’s pharmacy of choice.

“We are so very thankful for this opportunity to partner with Norton Healthcare to provide this service for our students and families,” said Teresa Brown, superintendent, MCS. “We know families are busy, and sometimes there are barriers to care, so we are very excited to offer this option during the school day for those who may need it. Our school nurses will work with administrators to communicate with our families regarding the details of how the program will work.”

“The goal is to keep children healthy, in school and learning,” said Rachel R. Alexander, DNP, APRN, manager of telehealth, Norton Healthcare. “Through the program, we can evaluate the child while at school and allow them to remain in class if possible.”

The Norton eCare Telemedicine Program launched in 2019 at three Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) elementary schools in Louisville, Kentucky, and expanded to all JCPS elementary schools in 2024. The grant from the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation will allow the expansion to Madison, Indiana.

“This program is a very strong statement to how it takes a village to care for children,” said Lynnie Meyer, R.N., Ed.D., FAHP, CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “Donors to the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation are making it possible to provide this type of care for children and their parents, making health care more accessible and convenient.”

The school telehealth visit is billable through the parent’s insurance plan or covered under Medicaid and Medicare. Copays are similar to an office visit. Parents must complete a registration form online to enroll their student in the program.  Visit SchoolTelehealth.NortonHealthcare.org to enroll students.

A new group of donors has joined the Wade Mountz Heritage Society after making planned gifts totaling more than $1.5 million to the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation and/or Norton Healthcare Foundation.

The model of charitable estate planning used for the Wade Mountz Heritage Society allows individuals to leave a lasting legacy. To date, members of the society have donated more than $60 million toward the future of health care in our community.

“We’ve recently seen some of the direct impact donors have been able to make by leaving a legacy through the Wade Mountz Heritage Society,” said Lynnie Meyer, Ed.D., R.N., CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “This includes helping to drive innovation, research, patient care and education.”

Established in 2008, the society recognizes individuals who have made irrevocable planned gifts of $100,000 or more to the foundations, which benefit the hospitals and services of Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s Hospital.

The Wade Mountz Heritage Society is named in honor of the late Norton Healthcare President Emeritus Wade Mountz and embodies many of his core values, such as his vision, leadership, character, commitment and integrity.

Members of the Wade Mountz Heritage Society are recognized at an annual event.

Norton Women’s Care soon will offer a new doula program that aims to improve the long-term health of new mothers. The program, which will begin this fall, will be made possible thanks in part to a $250,000 gift to the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation from Aetna Better Health of Kentucky. While doulas are welcome in many birthing hospitals, this is the first program in Kentucky that employs doulas as part of the care team.

“Traditionally, doulas employed by hospitals have served as birth coaches and postpartum support, but our new program will expand the role,” said Mary L. Schubert, DNP, MSN, system vice president, women’s services, Norton Healthcare. “Eligible patients will have someone who can help reduce the impacts of social determinants of health, as well as reduce the risks for pregnancy loss, health complications and even death.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of its Healthy People 2030 initiative to improve health and well-being, has listed social determinants of health as part of its five goals. These are conditions in a person’s environment that lead to risks and outcomes related to health and quality of life.

Doulas are uniquely qualified to assist in identifying and reducing some social determinants of health, serving as educators, advisers and even medical translators for pregnant patients both in providers’ offices and in homes,” said Melissa S. Redick, director of provider operations, Norton Medical Group. “It goes beyond actual care and to other issues.”

In addition to providing physical, emotional and partner support, these doulas will be able to connect patients with resources to assist with access to healthy food, transportation to and from provider visits, housing and legal issues.

According to a 2021 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black patients are two and a half times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Women of color are disproportionally at risk for high blood pressure and diabetes, which can lead to issues with pregnancy and childbirth, including swelling of the heart and blood clots.

“To improve maternal health and well-being in this community, we must further improve care for women of color,” Schubert said.

This new program will include several home visits throughout the patient’s pregnancy and the period after delivery. Eligible patients must live in the California, Portland or Russell neighborhood, and will receive additional prenatal care through Norton OB/GYN Associates and Norton Women’s Specialists downtown practices, with babies delivered at Norton Hospital. Initially, the program will employ three doulas.

“Aetna Better Health of Kentucky is excited to begin this journey with the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation,” said Paige Mankovich, chief operating officer, Aetna Better Health of Kentucky. “We are committed to supporting our communities by aligning our resources to help address critical health needs.

“Partners like Norton Healthcare make initiatives like this new doula program not only possible, but effective. We appreciate the passion they are bringing to the creation of this program and look forward to this program helping pregnant women in West Louisville.”

“We know that the health of a mother has an effect on the health of the baby, so this also will help improve infant health,” said Lecresha Sewell, APRN, a nurse practitioner with Norton Women’s Care who helped design the doula program. “And by following the patient after childbirth, a doula can help detect many complications that may occur in what we refer to as ‘the fourth trimester.’ Early detection is essential to improve health outcomes.”

“We expect this program to complement the obstetrics services we already offer in downtown Louisville, improving the entire pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood experience,” said Cara L. Bland, regional practice manager, Norton Medical Group. “Ultimately, the goal is to improve the long-term health of our new moms.”

Thirteen individuals and families have joined the Wade Mountz Heritage Society after making gifts totaling more than $1.3 million to the Children’s Hospital Foundation and/or Norton Healthcare Foundation. Established in 2008, the society recognizes individuals who have made irrevocable planned gifts of $100,000 or more to the foundations, which benefit the hospitals and services of Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s Hospital.

To date, members of the society have donated more than $54 million toward the future of health care in our community.

“We are grateful to all of the Wade Mountz Heritage Society donors for their support of health care needs in our community,” said Lynnie Meyer, Ed.D., R.N., CFRE, senior vice president and chief development officer, Norton Healthcare. “Supporting Norton Children’s Hospital and Norton Healthcare means a long-term investment in health and wellness, as well as the high-quality, high-touch, innovative care our patients have come to know and expect from our caregivers.”

The model of charitable estate planning used for the Wade Mountz Heritage Society allows individuals to leave a lasting legacy.

The Wade Mountz Heritage Society is named in honor of Norton Healthcare President Emeritus Wade Mountz and embodies many of his core values, such as his vision, leadership, character, commitment and integrity.

Members of the Wade Mountz Heritage Society are recognized at an annual dinner.
